chinese dragon red1 300x202 The Dragon and the PearlThere are many tales of the East where dragons held a powerful pearl. They were said to be the dragon’s most coveted treasure, as not all dragons had them. Kinabalu was one of the dragons.

Pearls were believed to be the tears of the moon, and some of these tears were swallowed by oysters.  Some were taken up by dragons, and others were bestowed upon those who needed it.

One tale of the dragon pearl… is of a poor boy, Xiao Shang,  and his mother.  Xiao Sheng had to cut grass to feed the animals for his mother, but they were barely surviving due to a drought.  Every day, the sun made the ground more and more dry, and so the boy had to travel farther and farther from home to find grass.  On one day in particular, he had walked many miles and found nothing.  Upon giving up, he spotted a lush area of grass, which he promptly cut.

Xiao Sheng soon noticed the very same spot of grass had regrown very rapidly.  In fact, it would never diminish in size no matter how much he would cut it.  This went on for several days.  He tried to transport the grass home, and, in doing so, discovered a beautiful pearl buried near the patch.  He gave it to his mother, who promptly hid it in a half-empty rice jar.   To the son’s dismay, the grass he had brought back and planted near the house the day before had withered and had not regrown.  However, the rice jar was filled to the brim!

They then placed the pearl, which they now knew was magic, into their small collection of gold coins.  After this, they were rich, and began to give to those in the village who had helped them when they were poor.

Sadly, suspicion set in.  Jealousy and greed prompted two of the villagers to try to steal the pearl.  Xiao Sheng swallows the pearl in haste.  It burns inside him, and was said to drink the well dry.   Still, his thirst is not quenched so he drinks dry the river.  After he drank the river he bagan to turn into a dragon and brought a much needed heavy rain to the village.

When the dragon leaves the village through the river, it turns its head many times, and each time he turns, the dragon’s massive body cuts into the river’s edge, "sculpting the banks with his last farewell."

Moral of the story:

Eat Pearls; Drink Water;  Be a Dragon; Do Good Things.
